3 Reliable Steps To Find The Best Dentist

By Dental health, General dentistry

white dental fillingsRegular cleanings and checkups are part of your first line of defense against dental health issues, so naturally you want to have the best dentist possible. What should you look for? If you’re new in town, or have been looking around for a new dentist, Future of Dentistry at Willows – North Andover suggests the following.

  • Location and Office Hours: It’s a little like real estate: location, location, location! Choosing a dentist that is near to where you live or work is important, since it makes it easier to make and keep your appointments. On the other hand, it is not the only consideration; some dentists may be worth driving a little further. Their office hours may be better suited to your schedule. We are open to best serve you.
  • Chairside Manner: This is one of the more important considerations. You want to feel comfortable with the person you are trusting with your smile. Do they explain any symptoms you have, and procedures they want to do? Do they listen to your concerns and answer all of your questions? Our team is trained in empathy, communication skills, and medical dental knowledge. We work hard to ensure your comfort and safety!
  • Qualifications: You can get information about a dentist’s qualifications from your local dental society or your insurer. It’s also a good idea to see what special qualifications your dentist may have.

Once you’ve done your homework, ask around. What do family and friends say? What about online reviews? Regular checkups at the dentist are essential to any good dental health regimen, and at Future of Dentistry at Willows – North Andover we are always honored to be part of the equation. Patient trust is everything to us! Patients from Greater Boston and Merrimack Valley come to us for general and restorative dentistry. Contact us today!

Think You May Have A Cavity?

By General dentistry

white dental fillings Yuma

Your teeth need a lot of tender, loving care. But sometimes, in spite of regular brushing and flossing, we end up with a new cavity – the common cold of dental health. At Future of Dentistry at Willows – North Andover, we have been filling cavities for years and would be happy to take care of any cavities or other dental issues you are experiencing.

Cavities refer to tooth decay, and it’s a sad fact that few of us go through life without getting at least one. For some children, a cavity is the first health problem they experience.

Cavities are caused when bacteria, acid, food debris, and saliva combine to form plaque. Plaque then clings to your teeth and the acid in the plaque starts to dissolve the enamel. The result is a hole in your tooth.

Typical cavity symptoms include:

  • Toothache
  • Pain when chewing
  • Sensitivity to sweet, hot, or cold food and drinks

If you notice any of these symptoms, please give us a call.

At Future of Dentistry at Willows – North Andover, we offer white fillings that match your teeth. We’re a mercury-free practice with a full range of general dentistry services. Call to schedule an appointment with us today!

4 Oral Ailments To Discuss With Your White Plains Dentist

By Uncategorized

Bad Breath Treatment

This article is about some of the most common conditions that should be discussed with us, at Future of Dentistry at Willows – North Andover.

There is a solution for each one of these issues.

  • Tooth Decay: This is easily the most common dental problem. Tooth decay (cavities) occurs when plaque combines with the sugars and/or starches in food to produce acids that attack tooth enamel. We can always do a drill-and-fill, but prevention via regular brushing and flossing is best.
  • Dry Mouth: Also known as xerostomia, this lack of saliva is very bothersome and can predispose you to a host of dilemmas such as decay and gum disease. It’s a common side effect of prescription medications, so make sure to bring a list of current prescriptions with you to your appointment.
  • Jaw Issues: If you suffer from jaw pain or notice a clicking sound, be sure to schedule an appointment with us immediately. These symptoms can be signs of a condition called temporomandibular disorder, or TMD.
  • Teeth Grinding: Known as bruxism, this can damage teeth surfaces. If you’ve been stressed out and find that you’ve been grinding your teeth, discuss it with us. An oral appliance can make all the difference.

At Future of Dentistry at Willows – North Andover, the dental health of our patients is always our top priority. Patients from Greater Boston and Merrimack Valley come to our office for general and restorative dentistry. Contact us today!

No Cavities? Thank Your Parents

By Dental health, General dentistry, Gum disease

how to prevent cavities

At Future of Dentistry at Willows – North Andover, we stay on top of new discoveries in the exciting field of dentistry and occasionally share interesting facts with our patients. Today’s post focuses on new findings in a compelling field of research: genetic dentistry.

According to Mary L. Marazita, director of the Center for Craniofacial and Dental Genetics at the University of Pittsburgh, “About 60% of the risk for tooth decay appears to be due to genetic factors.”

Whoa! Did she say 60%? That’s huge. You might be thinking: “That’s why I brush and floss but still get cavities.” Or, better yet, you might be thinking, “No wonder I have never had a cavity but eat candy often and occasionally go to bed without brushing.”

A recent article on CNN.com highlights tooth decay risk factors that have a genetic link:

  1. Enamel Strength: Your genes play an important role in the composition of your tooth enamel. Soft enamel is more cavity-prone.
  2. Sugar Cravings: Whether or not you love sugar has a genetic basis. Now you can blame your parents if you pop M&Ms all day. But it still isn’t good for your teeth!
  3. Chemical Composition of Saliva: Your saliva can protect against cavities – if it properly metabolizes critical minerals and vitamins like calcium, potassium, iron, and Vitamin C. Your genes influence your saliva’s power to prevent decay.
  4. Immune Response to Bacteria: We don’t like to think about the detrimental bacteria in our mouth but, hopefully, our immune system is ever-vigilant at fighting their constant attempts to cause decay and gum disease. The durability of your immune system is determined, in part, by genetics.

In the next few decades, scientists in the emerging specialty of genetic dentistry may play a critical role in the development of new cavity-prevention techniques.

So thank your parents if you have good dental health, and maintain it with regular brushing, flossing, and visits to Future of Dentistry at Willows – North Andover. Patients from Greater Boston and Merrimack Valley come to us for general and restorative dentistry. Contact us today!

Overcoming Dental Anxiety

By Dental health, General dentistry, Sedation Dentistry

 sleep dentistry

For millions of people, the mere thought of going to the dentist sends their anxiety level through the roof. This emotion can range from anxiety to outright phobia, and can be so intense that some people avoid the dentist entirely. At Future of Dentistry at Willows – North Andover, we can help with sedation dentistry.

To be blunt, skipping the dentist due to fear is a bad idea. If you don’t see the dentist for regular checkups, you are putting your dental health at risk. Healthy teeth and gums are important at every stage of life, and study after study has shown the link between your dental health and your overall health.

There are a lot of reasons people stress out just thinking about the dentist. For some, it may stem from a prior bad experience. Fear of pain may be involved, as well as a fear of anesthesics and possible side effects.

Whatever the reason, sedation dentistry has helped millions of people get the treatment they deserve.

We offer three types:

  • Nitrous Oxide. Also known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide has been used in dentistry for more than a hundred years and is highly effective. It works quickly and wears off quickly.
  • Oral conscious sedation. You take a prescribed sedative an hour or so before the appointment. It puts you in a deeply relaxed state, though you remain conscious. When the appointment is over, someone will have to drive you home.
  • IV Sedation. Administered intravenously, it is the strongest sedaton we offer. And it works! You’ll need a ride home with this one, too.

At Future of Dentistry at Willows – North Andover we want our patients to have a positive experience. If you cope with anxiety or phobia, ask about sedation dentistry. People from Greater Boston and Merrimack Valley also come to our practice for cosmetic dentistry. Call to schedule an appointment today!

Tooth Implant Placement: Before, During, After

By Dental health, Dental implants, Restorative dentistry

Dental implants are rapidly becoming the tooth replacement option of choice. Millions of Americans have chosen implants, like those available at Future of Dentistry at Willows – North Andover. Once the decision is made, patients usually want to know what’s involved every step of the way.

Before the Procedure

It begins with a consultation and preliminary exam. We’ll take X-rays of your teeth and jaw to make sure you have enough healthy bone structure. If you don’t, we may recommend bone grafting.

We’ll also inspect your gums for any signs of gum disease. Healthy gums are essential for a successful implant.

During Implant Surgery

After administering anesthesia, a guide hole is drilled into your jaw and a titanium post – which is the actual implant – is screwed in. The process takes about an hour.

After

Some patients experience minor pain and swelling. Over-the-counter pain relievers are usually enough to control it. An icepack can help, too. Most people can resume their usual activities the same day.

At Future of Dentistry at Willows – North Andover we have placed dental implants in people from Greater Boston and Merrimack Valley, who also come to us for our complete general dentistry. Call to schedule an appointment with us today!

The Future Of Tooth Decay

By Dental health, General dentistry

The Future Of Tooth Decay

Tooth decay is the single most common dental issue there is. Unlike a cut on your finger, a cavity will not heal itself. In a worst case scenario, an untreated cavity can lead to future problems, up to and including tooth loss. That’s why we stress regular brushing and flossing to all of our patients, at Future of Dentistry at Willows – North Andover.

Cavities form when acids in the mouth attack the enamel and dentin of the teeth. The acid is produced by bacteria in plaque, that sticky film that forms on the surfaces of teeth. When sugar is introduced it interacts with the bacteria in the plaque, and makes the acids, which attack the teeth and cause cavities.

That’s why it is so important to choose food and drink wisely. But it isn’t easy, is it? Sugar seems to be in just about everything. Health experts say the average person in the United States consumes about 19.5 teaspoons of sugar every single day! That’s twice as much as is recommended by the American Heart Association.

Knowing how much sugar is in the food that you buy is vital: not just to your teeth, but to your overall health. Reading ingredient labels on processed foods is essential.

At Future of Dentistry at Willows – North Andover, we want the best possible dental health for all of our patients. So cut back on sugar, brush and floss your teeth, and see us for a cleaning and checkup every six months. Patients from Great Boston and the Merrimack Valley come to us for general and restorative dentistry. Contact us today!

Fluoride Treatments: Not Just For Kids

By General dentistry, Teeth whitening

fluoride treatment

You rarely hear the word “toothpaste” without it being preceded by “fluoride.” Fluoride toothpaste is good for teeth, and at Future of Dentistry at Willows – North Andover, we encourage its use.

Fluoride is an essential mineral that helps your teeth stay strong. It is found in some foods and water and makes toothpastes more effective at fighting cavities. Fluoride helps teeth by making them stronger and more resistant to the harmful acid that is formed by bacteria.

If you wonder if you or your child is getting enough fluoride, talk to us about fluoride supplements. We will let you know if they are required and determine the precise supplement dosage.

At Future of Dentistry at Willows – North Andover we are committed to maintaining the dental health of each of our valued patients. Patients from throughout Greater Boston and Merrimack Valley come to us for family and restorative dentistry. Contact us today!

Don’t Put Off Your Dental Exam

By Dental health, Emergency dentistry, General dentistry

comprehensive dental deep cleanings AlexandriaNo matter your age, the team at Future of Dentistry at Willows – North Andover encourages you to have regular cleanings and checkups. Along with daily brushing and flossing, it’s the best way to stay on top of your dental health.

Knowledge is Power

Sometimes people put off their next checkup because they don’t think they’re all that important. But trust us: exams are one of the best way to prevent dental problems down the road.

Most checkups begin with a cleaning from the hygienist. We’ll scrape any tartar from your teeth. Tartar is hardened plaque, and you can’t get it off with a toothbrush and floss. That’s one of the reasons brushing twice a day is so important: it helps prevent plaque buildup!

Next we’ll polish your teeth with a gritty toothpaste. This is pretty harsh stuff, and it does a great job removing surface stains from your teeth. Sometimes patients wonder if they can get something like it for use at home. The trouble with that is that it’s just too abrasive to use every day.

The Checkup

After cleaning, it’s the dentist’s turn. We’ll look for any new cavities that may have appeared since your last visit. We might take X-rays, although this is not done at every visit. We’ll examine your gums, too, for any signs of gum disease.

Finally, we’ll look at your tongue, throat, face, head, and neck. We’re checking for swelling, redness, or any signs of cancer.

At Future of Dentistry at Willows – North Andover we do everything possible to ensure your good dental health. We offer complete family dentistry, and patients from Greater Boston and Merrimack Valley also come to us for cosmetic dentistry and dental implants. Contact us today!
