The ADA: Promoting Dental Health Since 1859

By dental educationNo Comments

American Dental Association Wakefield

Hello, thank you for visiting the Future of Dentistry blog. I’m Doctor Gerry Casazza. Along with my fantastic team, I have been providing premium dental care since 1991.

Today’s article is about the American Dental Association. You have probably seen the ADA logo on toothpaste and floss—but what else do you know about this dental association?

The ADA’s self-proclaimed mission is to improve the level of public oral health by supporting the dental industry through not-for-profit federal, state, and local chapters. It was established in 1859 and is run by its members, which currently total over 160,000.

The ADA Seal of Acceptance is not an endorsement of a product per se, but rather is a confirmation of the assertions made by said product. Companies who want the ADA seal for a product must submit proof of rigorous scientific testing. Once submitted, the ADA re-tests the product to further verify results. There are currently over 300 products with the ADA certification.

The ADA does more than assess dental products. Here are some other ways the ADA works to carry out its mission:

  • Provides resources to support dentists and their practices
  • Educates the public about oral health
  • Works to maximize access to dental care
  • Offers counsel on critical issues that influence the dental industry
  • Works with other organizations on scientific research projects and public health initiatives
  • Offers scholarships to dental students

We Take Jaw Pain Seriously

By General dentistry, TMJNo Comments

Wakefield TMJ TreatmentIf you are impacted by temporomandibular joint disorder or TMD, you know how the pain and discomfort can lower your quality of life. Future of Dentistry TMD treatment has helped countless patients manage their condition.

The temporomandibular or jaw joint connects the lower jaw bone to the skull. TMD is often associated with jaw and facial pain, headaches, earaches, neck pain, and chewing difficulty. TMD is also associated with jaw clicking, locking, or clenching, and can cause tooth damage and bone loss.

Many TMJ patients first came to Future of Dentistry after trying to relieve their frequent headaches. Since, 1991, we have observed that many dental patients don’t realize they have TMJ disorder because it can be challenging to pinpoint perfectly what is causing the pain. A TMJ specialist can properly diagnose your specific issues and recommend an effective treatment program.

Because a comprehensive treatment plan is most beneficial, we work closely with a network of TMD specialists including ENT doctors, neurologists, and physical therapists. If you are suffering from jaw pain, we recommend a consultation with Doctor Casazza at Future of Dentistry in Wakefield.

At Future of Dentistry, we take jaw pain seriously.

Affordable One-Visit Tooth Fix

By Dental health, Emergency dentistry, General dentistryNo Comments

affordable fix for chipped tooth Boston

Some Boston people are unhappy with the way their teeth look but many mistakenly assume that cosmetic dentistry is far too pricey to pursue.

Sure, a complete mouth reconstruction can be a significant investment. Consider the cost of dental school and post-graduate training for a master level cosmetic dentist. Consider the expense of individually creating multiple restorations at a high-tech dental lab. Consider the cost of setting up and maintaining a full-service dental practice or laboratory.

Before you give up on improving your smile, however, think about a less celebrated but extremely effective and cost-effective cosmetic dental remedy: dental bonding.

Dental bonding has a wide range of applications for unattractive teeth. Bonding can fix a tooth that is damaged, chipped, short, or discolored. It can also correct teeth that have gaps in between them.

How does the dental bonding procedure work?

First, your tooth will be slightly (but painlessly) roughed up to help the resin adhere. Your dentist will use a shade guide to confirm the precise color of composite to match the existing teeth. Your dentist will apply liquid composite resin on the tooth, layer by layer. He or she will carefully shape and polish it before it hardens. The tooth is then covered with a conditioning liquid that helps with adhesion.

Once the resin is bonded, it is further molded to the precise shape for your bite and appearance. A laser helps rapidly bond the resin in place as it hardens. Further shaping and polishing, if needed, complete the procedure. The result is a beautiful smile.

Bonding is a simple and cost-effective method for perfecting your smile. Call today to set up an appointment

Not Happy With Your Gums? Ask About Contouring

Not Happy With Your Gums? Ask About Contouring In Wakefield

Some Boston and Wakefield dental patients who are interested in a full smile makeover might want to consider gum contouring. This cosmetic dentistry procedure is helpful for people who feel that their gums rest too low or too high on their teeth.

If you feel that your gums cover too much of the surface of your teeth, it may seem that your teeth are too small and out of proportion with your mouth. For Dracut, Billerica, and Lowell residents who have teeth that appear too long, gum contouring may help with your appearance, but your Wakefield dentist may also feel that it is necessary to counteract gum recession, a condition that can lead to periodontal disease.

Talk to your Boston area dentist about gum contouring. Many periodontists in the Wakefield area perform this procedure, as well as some general dentists.

I’m Doctor Gerry Casazza, and I’ve been practicing dentistry in Wakefield since 1991. One of the most rewarding things about my job is seeing my Dracut, Billerica, and Lowell patients gain renewed confidence in themselves after undergoing simple cosmetic dentistry procedures.

We are currently accepting new patients, so if you are looking for quality dental care in the Wakefield area, call us today for an appointment!

Oral Health For Wakefield Diabetics

By Dental health, General dentistry, Gum diseaseNo Comments

Oral Health For Boston Diabetics

Today’s Boston dental article is entitled ‘Oral Health For Boston Diabetics.’ Many Boston people with diabetes have dental problems. However, gum disease, tooth loss, and periodontal disease are not unavoidable.

Blood sugar is the complicating factor. Boston diabetics who control their blood sugar have lower rates of dental problems. In fact, many Boston dentists have noticed no increased risk of dental disease among diabetics who maintain healthy blood sugar levels.

When blood sugar levels rise, the amount of sugars and starches increase in your mouth. These substances combine with the bacteria naturally present to create enamel-eroding plaque. Untreated plaque creates cavities.

In addition to cavities, Boston dental patients with diabetes need to be vigilant about gum health. Because diabetes can make it harder to control the growth of bacteria, the amount of plaque in your mouth can multiply quicker. Plaque not only causes cavities, it inflames and weakens gum tissue and eventually the bone surrounding teeth.

Untreated gum disease progresses to periodontitis, a more severe infection. Because Boston diabetics have a lower resistance to infection, it can be difficult to reverse periodontitis in people with diabetes. To make matters even worse, the presence of infection can make it harder to maintain a healthy blood sugar level.

Bottom line? 1: Brush and floss regularly to prevent plaque build-up. 2: See your Boston dentist for twice-yearly cleanings to remove any plaque and tartar that has accumulated under the gumline.

Doctor Casazza of Future of Dentistry is accepting new patients in the Wakefield, Dracut Billerica, and Lowell area. We can help diabetic dental patients keep their smile beautiful. If you are in need of cosmetic dentistry because of diabetes-related decay or gum disease, we can restore your beautiful smile with the latest tooth restoration options. Ask us about crowns, dental implants, implant anchored dentures, porcelain veneers, inlays/onlays, and same-day restorations.

Be Wise About Your Wisdom Teeth

By Dental health, General dentistryNo Comments

Be Wise About Your Wisdom Teeth, Boston

Hi, I’m Doctor Gerry Casazza, and today we will be discussing the often misunderstood subject of wisdom teeth.

Wisdom teeth are sometimes called the third molars because they are even farther back in the mouth than the two sets of regular molars we all have. These four teeth usually erupt when a person is eighteen or nineteen.

Many dentists recommend that wisdom teeth be removed to prevent misplacement in the mouth.

If a wisdom tooth doesn’t fully erupt, it may cause an opening in the gums that can attract bacteria and become infected. Some wisdom teeth are so misplaced that they can actually cause problems with the jaw bone. Both of these conditions can cause severe pain.

If you are in the Boston area and are wondering if your wisdom teeth need to be removed, call us today at 781-245-2299 to schedule an appointment. We can assess the condition and placement of your wisdom teeth and discuss a treatment plan.

Mini Implants May Be Right For You

By UncategorizedNo Comments

How Mini Dental Implants Can Help Your Smile in 01880 I’m Gerry Casazza of Future of Dentistry in Wakefield. Today’s topic is mini dental implants, sometimes called “immediate implants”.

Though they are not as well known as traditional dental implants, mini implants are also being used successfully in the Wakefield area to improve smiles. Like their larger diameter counterparts, mini implants can support a restoration for one or more missing teeth or replace a bridge or fixed denture. Denture wearers benefit greatly from these slip-free dental implants that are anchored securely in the jaw bone.

In some cases, a patient is unable to receive traditional full-size dental implants due to insufficient bone thickness. There are also mini-implant patients who are not able to undergo dental implant surgery due to health issues. These patients are often excellent candidates for the mini version.

The placement of toothpick-size mini dental implants can sometimes be done in one dental visit. The placement usually requires no incisions or stitches. Recovery time, if needed, is frequently very short. Most patients are able to eat dinner that evening.

Don’t let the word “mini” fool you; your smile can receive a maximum upgrade with mini dental implants. Call Future of Dentistry at 781-245-2299 to schedule a consultation.

Helping Teeth Survive Adolescence

By General dentistry, Pediatric dentistryNo Comments

adolescent dental health Wakefield

If you are the parent of a teen, you may already have some concerns about your child’s well-being. As young men and women progress toward complete independence, some make questionable choices when it comes to health.

You may know Wakefield teens that skip meals and others that eat ramen noodles for lunch and dinner. Some teenagers spend more hours on Instagram than sleeping. Braces can hinder proper brushing. Eating disorders such as bulimia can quickly erode enamel and hurt a smile.

Dental troubles manifesting in the adolescent years can influence teeth for life. Let’s explore some important dental issues for adolescents.

Wisdom Teeth
The third molars usually come in between late adolescence and the mid-twenties. Common wisdom teeth problems include bite misalignment, decay, gum disease, and damage to the nearby teeth. It is vital to monitor wisdom teeth and follow the counsel of your dentist.

Eating Disorders
Parents who notice their adolescent abnormally preoccupied with body image and weight loss should be on the lookout for bulimia and anorexia. These serious disorders should not be ignored. Parents are advised to seek treatment immediately if they discover that their teen is binging and purging or intentionally restricting food.

Oral Health and Orthodontia
Braces can make proper brushing challenging. Toothbrushes and flossing devices that squirt water can help teenagers with braces clean their teeth and gums.

Sugar-Heavy Diet
If you visit any Massachusetts high school during lunch hour, you will see that sugar-laden soda, juice, and energy drinks are becoming a beverage staple. (Perhaps we adults are setting a bad example.) While juice is definitely the healthiest choice of the three, heavy juice consumption can damage enamel just as effectively as a can of Coke. Water is the best drink for teeth as well as calcium-rich milk, which leads us to our next section.

Inadequate Calcium Intake
Some adolescents who drank milk daily as kids curtail their consumption when they start eating meals away from home. This is unfortunate because calcium is just as crucial for youth as it is for younger children. For strong teeth and bones, encourage your teen to enjoy low-fat dairy products daily.

Sports Injuries
Athletics benefit youth in a number of ways but, unfortunately, also pose a threat to teeth. Make sure your teen wears a protective custom mouthguard when participating in any activity where a mouth injury can occur.

We encourage Wakefield parents to be vigilant about twice-yearly dental exams and cleanings for their teens. Many oral troubles arise unnoticed. To schedule a comprehensive examination and cleaning, call Future of Dentistry.

Afraid Of The Dentist? Let’s Talk About Sedation.

By Sedation DentistryNo Comments

Afraid of the Dentist? Your Wakefield Sedation Dentist Can Help If you suffer from severe anxiety when undergoing (or even thinking about!) dental treatment, conscious sedation is for you.

Conscious sedation dentistry is available at Future of Dentistry.

Whether it is called relaxation dentistry, oral conscious sedation, sleep dentistry, or anxiety-free dentistry, it is completely safe and used by many Boston area dentists.

Though it may sound impossible, with sleep dentistry, you can actually relax during dental visits.

In addition, healing times for oral surgery and extensive restorative treatments are often shorter if the patient is sedated during treatment.

Sedation dentistry is useful for the following:

  • Teeth sensitivity
  • Fear of needles
  • A strong gag reflex
  • Difficulty in controlling body movement
  • Lengthy multi-procedure visits
  • Difficulty becoming numb with traditional injections

If you need oral surgery such as a or wisdom tooth extraction, call Future of Dentistry at 781-245-2299 for information about sedation dentistry.

In the unfortunate event that you experience a dental emergency—remember that we take walk-ins and have weekend hours.
