Toothache? Broken Braces? Knocked-Out Tooth?

By General dentistry, Restorative dentistry

Bad Breath Treatment Boston

Let’s discuss three dental issues that may require immediate treatment.

Toothache

Most of us experience a toothache at some point in our lives. Even one day with oral pain can seem like an eternity.

A toothache could be a symptom of an abscess. If an abscess progresses, it can destroy the root of the tooth. It can even destroy the surrounding bone.

Possible causes of a toothache are tooth decay, an injury to the tooth, a broken crown, an infection, and TMD (temporomandibular disorder).

Let Doctor Casazza take care of you. You will quickly be back to pain-free eating, speaking, and sleeping. What a relief!

Call Future of Dentistry if you have a toothache.

Broken Braces

What if one of the wires on your braces comes loose? It can damage your teeth or gums. If this happens and you cut the inside of your mouth, rinse with a solution of salt and water.

Call Future of Dentistry if a wire on your braces breaks. We have extended hours for when an oral problem can’t wait.

Knocked-Out Tooth

We hope this never happens to you. But we are here in the unfortunate event that it does. And it’s not the end of the world.

If a tooth is knocked out, it may be successfully re-implanted if done quickly. Make sure you hold the tooth only by the crown. Never touch the root!

If the tooth is dirty, rinse it gently with water. Be wary not to brush off any tissue attached. If possible, put the tooth back in the socket. (This may not be possible with younger children.)

These are just a few of the urgent-care issues we treat at Future of Dentistry. But we are also a full-service dental office.

We perform:

  • Root canals
  • Tooth extractions
  • Cosmetic dentistry
  • CEREC same-day crowns
  • Same-day teeth whitening

Save our number in your contacts on your phone. If you have a dental emergency, you can call without delay.

No Dental Insurance? Prioritize Spending For Dental Care

By Dental health, dental insurance, dental planning

dental financing Wakefield

Millions of Americans don’t have dental insurance, and many Massachusetts employer plans have limited benefits. Some individuals who fail to get adequate dental care say “It’s too costly.”

If you are really living below the poverty level, this excuse may be valid. But if you have an average income, you can probably shift your priorities to find money in your budget to invest in a healthy smile.

You have probably heard of the “Latte Factor” which refers to the surprising amount of money that adds up if you buy a significant caffeinated beverage every morning. Even if you don’t drink coffee, you probably have a personal habit that costs a few dollars daily but adds up to hundreds of dollars a year. Soda pop, beer, an eight-dollar deli sandwich, a game of golf. How about personal grooming—manis, pedis, facials, and professional hair coloring. What about the money you spend for convenience—pizza delivery, ATM fees, heat-and-eat meals. How much do you spend on premium cable, video game rentals, full-price movies, and season tickets to sporting events?

If you have foregone dental exams, cleanings, and treatments because you think it’s too pricey, I hope this Future of Dentistry dental blog post has opened your eyes to purchases that may be far less important than a healthy smile. Remember, if you ignore dental problems, eventually they will require more extensive treatments. Filling a cavity is relatively inexpensive, a root canal costs more, and a dental implant is a major investment. What is a tooth worth? Every single one is priceless. And don’t forget that dental issues impact the stamina of your entire body.

Future of Dentistry in Wakefield provides competitively priced premium dental care including veneers, crowns, bonding, orthodontia, and teeth whitening. Ask us about dental financing options.

Don’t Let Fear Of The Dentist Compromise Your Oral Health

By Dental health, General dentistry

sleep dental Wakefield

If you have claustrophobia, you forego cave exploration. If you have acrophobia (fear of heights), you avoid skydiving. In either case, you can live a fulfilling life without engaging in these activities.

What if you have dentophobia or a fear of the dentist? (Yes, it’s a real thing with an official name.) This is different than the phobias mentioned previously. Since dental visits are essential for a healthy smile, it’s not wise to simply avoid dental treatment.

Yet many individuals try to do just that. That is, until they have a problem that gets so painful they are forced to white knuckle it through a dental visit. At that point, the treatment may be an extraction that could have been prevented with earlier intervention or preventative treatments.

If you are plagued with severe anxiety when undergoing dental treatment, oral sedation is for you. Whether it is called relaxation dentistry, oral conscious sedation, sleep dentistry, or anxiety-free dentistry, it has proven to be safe and effective.

Dentophobia is complex and may be accompanied by any of the following:

  • Teeth sensitivity
  • Fear of needles
  • A strong gag reflex
  • Difficulty in controlling body movement
  • Difficulty becoming numb with standard injections

With oral conscious sedation, dentistry patients can relax or even sleep through dental treatment.

You select the amount of sedation necessary:

  • Mild sedation: relaxes you while you remain conscious.
  • Moderate sedation: provides a deeper level of relaxation with partial consciousness.
  • Deep sedation: you are almost entirely unconscious but can be awakened.
  • General anesthesia: this sends you to dreamland from which you awake after it’s over with no memory of the service.

Dental Care For ICU Patients Lowers Infection Risk

By Dental health, General dentistry

Wakefield best family dentist

Hi, I’m doctor Gerry Casazza of Future of Dentistry. Today’s post focuses on an article that appeared recently on ScienceDaily.com. The article describes a study of Brazilian ICU patients that compared infection rates of those who received enhanced oral care instead of routine oral care. The patients who received the more intense dental care were 56 percent less likely to develop a respiratory infection during their stay.

Enhanced dental care included teeth brushing, tongue scraping, removal of calculus, atraumatic restorative treatment of caries, tooth extraction and topical application of chlorhexidine corresponding to each patient’s needs four to five times a week. Comparatively, regular treatment consisted of mechanical cleansing using gauze followed by topical application of chlorhexidine three times a day.”1

“Bacteria causing healthcare-associated infections often start in the oral cavity,” said Fernando Bellissimo-Rodrigues, MD, lead author of the study. “This study suggests that having a dentist provide weekly care as part of the ICU team may improve outcomes for vulnerable patients in this setting.”1

If a member of your family has serious health concerns, you may want to talk to their doctor about the oral health implications of their condition. In unfortunate cases where one of my patients experiences severe health issues, I am happy to work with their medical team to ensure that their dental health is not compromised. Even some manageable chronic conditions can require more frequent exams and cleanings.

Though this study pertains to ICU patients, it is also a reminder to all of us. Receiving consistent quality dental care and practicing proper daily oral hygiene are important for everyone. Some patients have an inaccurate view of oral health – they seem to have the notion that it exists autonomously. It is actually interdependent with general physical health.

At Future of Dentistry, we see ourselves as key members of your healthcare team and are dedicated to your physical, mental, and emotional health. If you are looking for a committed dental practice in Wakefield, we invite you to schedule a consultation by calling 781-245-2299

You can meet me, doctor Casazza, and my team of dental professionals. Thanks for visiting our dental blog.

Re-Contour Your Teeth

By Clear braces, Cosmetic dentistry

Re-Contour Your Teeth At Future of Dentistry

With clear braces from Future of Dentistry at Willows – North Andover you can improve your bite and dental health without old-fashioned metal and bracket braces.

Clear braces bring your teeth into proper alignment but make orthodontic treatment inconspicuous. The proper name for them is “aligners,” and they look a lot like an athlete’s mouth guard.

You wear a series of these aligners to put light pressure on your teeth. Each new aligner increases the pressure, which is what brings them into alignment. Each set of aligners is worn from one to two weeks before you go to a new one.

The benefits of clear aligners include:

They’re inconspicuous. People standing just a few feet away from you may not even realize you’re wearing them.

They are removeable. For best results you should wear them most of the time. But you can take them out for meals and for flossing and brushing.

No metal in your mouth!

To find out whether clear aligners are right for you, please call us at Future of Dentistry at Willows – North Andover. We’ve improved the smiles of people in Greater Boston and Merrimack Valley, who also come to us for restorative dentistry and sedation. Schedule an appointment today!

New Protein For Dental Implant Patients

By Dental implants, Restorative dentistry

North Andover Dental ImplantsCountless men and women have replaced missing teeth with jaw-bone anchored tooth implants. Unlike a dental bridge, a tooth implant consists of a titanium post inserted into the jaw bone. The bone meshes with the post to create a strong base for the natural-looking prosthetic tooth and crown that attaches to the post.

Dental implants are usually the perfect restoration for people who want to replace a missing tooth. There is a problem, however, if the jaw bone is too thin at the implant site.

When a tooth is extracted, the bone loses the blood circulation at the former site of the root. Consequently, bone recession often occurs. If the recession is extensive, there is not enough bone to hold the dental implant post.

Bone grafting can augment the bone at the implant site and provide the bone density necessary for a successful implant. This is usually effective, but it does require time for the new bone to be produced. A new discovery may provide a quicker solution for regenerating bone.

Researchers at the Georgia Health Sciences University College of Dental Medicine have identified a protein that quickly stimulates the production of new bone. The research team, led by Dr. Ulf M.E. Wikesjo, implanted bone morphogenetic protein in test subjects and discovered that “more new bone formed within four weeks than with conventional bone grafting.”

This protein will require extensive testing before it is available for dental implant patients. However, I am pleased with the prospect of an additional method for making dental implants possible for my patients with missing teeth and jaw bone recession.

For information about tooth restoration options including tooth implants, dental bridges, and porcelain crowns, call Future of Dentistry.

Keeping Patients Calm Since 1991

By Dental health, General dentistry, Sedation Dentistry

sleep dentistry Wakefield

If you tense up just thinking about going to the dentist, you may benefit from sedation dentistry offered by Future of Dentistry at Willows – North Andover.

Millions of Americans stress out when they have to see the dentist. It is referred to as dental anxiety. There is a more severe form, too, called dental phobia. In both, some people would rather skip the dentist altogether than sit down for a checkup. The problem with that, of course, is it puts their dental health at risk.

There are lots of reasons why people develop anxiety or phobia over dental care. It often stems from a bad experience they had with a dentist as a kid. Fear of pain may be involved, as well as a fear of anesthesics and possible side effects.

Whatever the cause, sedation dentistry has helped millions of people get through their appointments.

We offer three types:

Nitrous Oxide. You also know this as laughing gas. Nitrous oxide has been used in dentistry for more than a century and is highly effective.

Oral conscious sedation. You take a sedative an hour or so before the appointment. You won’t sleep, but will be in a deeply relaxed state. When the appointment is over, someone will have to drive you home.

IV Sedation. As the name suggests, this is a sedative that is administered intravenously. You won’t sleep with this one, either, but will be in a deeply relaxed state. You’ll need an escort for a ride here and back.

Remember, it is critical that you do not compromise your dental health by skipping the dentist. Sedation dentistry from Future of Dentistry at Willows – North Andover has helped patients throughout Greater Boston and Merrimack Valley. Our services include general and family dentistry.
