Pamper Yourself With Professional Teeth Whitening

By Cosmetic dentistry, Teeth whitening

Have you ever thought about getting your teeth whitened? At Future of Dentistry you get to relax in a comfy chair, and enjoy a bright smile when you leave.

Everyone, it seems, would like to have teeth that are whiter. The good news is that it has never been easier to achieve. There are tons of whitening products available at the grocery store: toothpastes and strips and other whitening options.

Most commercially available products do an adequate job whitening your teeth. But none can match professional teeth whitening.

We use the Opalescence® whitening system and offer two options: in-office whitening, and take-home kits. With in-office whitening, the dentist applies a top-of-the-line bleaching gel and your teeth become several shades lighter while you wait.

For our take-home option, a powerful whitening gel is placed in trays that are custom-fitted to your teeth. The trays have a special seal to keep the gel in and keep saliva from contaminating it. The results, we think you’ll agree, are quite startling.

You deserve to be pampered! At Future of Dentistry, our teeth whitening systems are unmatched. Patients from throughout Greater Boston and Merrimack Valley come to us for whitening and other cosmetic dentistry procedures. Request an appointment, and find out what we can do for your smile!

Common Myths About Cosmetic Dentistry

By Cosmetic dentistry, dental education, Dental health

At Future of Dentistry, we improve smiles with cosmetic dentistry every day. From the questions that some patients ask, though, it seems there are some myths about what cosmetic dentistry can and cannot do. So, we’re using this blog post to clear up a few of them.

Myth #1: Cosmetic Dentistry is Never Necessary for a Healthy Smile

Many “cosmetic” dental procedures are not solely cosmetic. Procedures such as tooth replacement prevent potential issues like tooth movement, bone loss, and difficulty chewing and speaking.

Myth #2: A Dental Bridge is the Only Way to Replace a Missing Tooth

Dental bridges have been used for many years with success. However, dental implants are often a better choice for replacing one or more missing teeth. Dental implants have many advantages. They feel like natural teeth, they are stronger, and they are easier to clean than dental bridges. Implants can also be used to anchor dentures or partial dentures.

Myth #3: At-Home Teeth Whitening is as Effective as Professional Whitening

Commercially purchased whitening systems cannot compare to professional-strength teeth whitening treatments. They may remove surface stains, but do not provide the best results.

Myth #4: Dental Bonding is the Best Way to Fix a Chipped Tooth

Dental bonding can restore the shape of a tooth, but may not be the best long-term solution. If you have a damaged tooth, you may be a good candidate for porcelain veneers.

Myth #5: Braces are the Only Way to Correct Crooked Teeth

Braces can transform a smile, even in adults. However, if your teeth are only slightly crooked, porcelain veneers can reshape your teeth and help you get a beautiful smile.

At Future of Dentistry, we want the best possible smile for you. Patients from throughout Greater Boston and Merrimack Valley also come to us for general and restorative dentistry. Request an appointment today!

Do You Grind Your Teeth While You Sleep?

By Dental health, General dentistry

A lot of people clench or grind their teeth, especially as they sleep. It’s called bruxism and can lead to jaw pain and tooth damage. If this sounds like you or someone close to you, talk to us about it at Future of Dentistry.

Most grinding occurs during sleep. If you wake up with a sore jaw and dull headache, it could be a clue, especially if it happens on a regular basis.

Anxiety or stress are common causes of bruxism, but not the only reasons. It can also be related to an abnormal bite, or missing or crooked teeth.

We can diagnose bruxism and discuss the possibility of a mouthguard to protect your teeth while you sleep.

3 Short-Term Solutions

  1. Control caffeine or alcohol intake as these may increase tooth grinding.
  2. Avoid gum and, don’t chew on pens or pencils. This can help the jaw from clenching repeatedly.
  3. Allow the jaw to relax; sometimes just setting your tongue between your teeth will help.

At Future of Dentistry, the dental health of our patients is of utmost importance. We offer complete general dentistry. Patients from throughout Greater Boston and Merrimack Valley also come to our office for cosmetic and restorative options. Request an appointment with us today!

15 Things You Didn’t Know About Teeth

By Dental health, General dentistry

Teeth are alive, but it’s easy to forget that and take them for granted. At Future of Dentistry, we never take teeth for granted; but then again, as dental professionals, we probably understand better than most just how amazing teeth can be.

We’re using this blog post to share some of the more interesting facts about teeth. Here are a few facts you might not know about them.

15 Interesting Dental Facts

  1. Children’s teeth are soft until about age 10.
  2. A tooth with a crown can get a cavity.
  3. Your gum tissue is as vital as your teeth.
  4. Some prescription drugs can increase your risk of tooth decay.
  5. Some home faucet water filters remove fluoride.
  6. 19 percent of children between the ages of 2 and 19 have untreated cavities.
  7. Heartburn can be damaging for teeth.
  8. Allergies can cause tooth grinding.
  9. Dried fruit is just as adverse for teeth as sticky candy.
  10. Tooth enamel cannot repair itself, though dentin and cementum (the substance that surrounds the tooth root) are capable of partial regeneration.
  11. A Harvard-led team used low-powered lasers to activate stem cells and stimulate the growth of teeth in rats and human dental tissue in a lab.
  12. There are about 300 types of bacteria in your mouth.
  13. Chewing sugarless gum after meals can help remove food particles on your teeth. You still need to brush, but if you can’t brush immediately after meals, sugarless gum can help keep your teeth clean.
  14. Cavities often don’t cause pain until they have reached the root and nerve of the tooth. Visit us regularly to prevent cavities or at least to detect them when they are small.
  15. Bone recession can cause tooth loss even if no decay is present.

At Future of Dentistry, we want all of our patients to have clean and healthy teeth, along with beautiful smiles. Patients from throughout Greater Boston and Merrimack Valley come to us for cosmetic and general dentistry. Request an appointment today!

Is It Growing In Your Mouth?

By Dental health, General dentistry

Plaque is that filmy stuff that forms on teeth. Since it is caused by the breakdown of the foods we eat, plaque formation is a constant process. And that’s why we keep reminding our patients to brush and floss twice a day at Future of Dentistry.

The Plaque Process

Bacteria naturally occurs in the mouth. It will try to colonize on the smooth surfaces of your teeth.

At first, it will be soft enough to be removed with a fingernail. After 48 hours, it begins to harden. Give it 10 days and it will turn into that substance most difficult to remove: tartar.

This bacteria feeds on sugars and produces acid that will eat away at the tissues of the tooth, leading to cavities. Cavities will originate on the surface and spread through the tooth.

Brushing and flossing twice a day is your best defense against plaque. Patients from throughout Greater Boston and Merrimack Valley come to Future of Dentistry for general and cosmetic dentistry, and so much more. Request an appointment today!

Rather Have A Root Canal?

By General dentistry, Restorative dentistry

Have you ever heard the phrase ‘I’d rather have a root canal’ to describe something painful or unpleasant? At Future of Dentistry, we perform root canal therapy routinely.

A Straightforward Procedure

Root canals are not all that complicated. The most important thing to remember is that the procedure is done to save an infected or damaged tooth. We do that by cleaning out the infection inside, filling the space that leaves, and sealing it.

Teeth that have had a root canal can last a lifetime. Most patients say their root canals were virtually painless and not much different than having a cavity filled.

One reason for that is modern anesthesia, which is better than ever. We begin with a local anesthetic, and that’s enough for a lot of patients. We also have stronger options.

Root canals are usually completed in just one appointment. It takes about two hours to complete the procedure. You may need to schedule a follow-up for a crown or filling, but in simple cases, everything can be done in just one session.

At Future of Dentistry, root canals do not live up to their bad reputation. Patients from throughout Greater Boston and Merrimack Valley call us for general and restorative dentistry. Request an appointment today!

Aesthetic Dentistry Solves Difficult Oral Problems

By Cosmetic dentistry, Restorative dentistry

Do you fear that your smile is beyond repair due to damage or neglect? Rest assured, that may not be true. At Future of Dentistry we use cosmetic dentistry to improve smiles every day.

Here are some tough dental problems we routinely solve:

Tough Problem 1: Insufficient Bone for Dental Implant
Solution: Bone Grafting

Solution: Restorative Dentistry

We can address multiple issues by restoring your teeth and mouth to a functional and aesthetically pleasing state. It might involve filling cavities, restoring or replacing missing teeth, or repairing damage with a crown. Our goal is twofold: restoring your natural smile, and preventing future dental health problems.

With cosmetic dentistry from Future of Dentistry there is always hope for your smile! Patients from throughout Greater Boston and Merrimack Valley also come to us for complete restorative dentistry. Call us to schedule an appointment today!

Can I Objectively Evaluate My Smile?

By Cosmetic dentistry, Dental health

A beautiful and healthy smile can be your best physical attribute. After all, your smile is one of the first things people notice about you. At Future of Dentistry we use cosmetic dentistry to help our patients get fabulous smiles.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If you look at your smile in the mirror and think it’s unattractive, it doesn’t really matter what anybody else thinks. But what if you are not sure?

There are many flaws that can detract from a great smile. Missing teeth is a biggie. Dental implants are a lifelike, fully functional solution to one or more missing teeth, including molars.

Yellow or gray teeth diminish the appeal of a smile, even one that is perfectly healthy and aligned. Crooked teeth, too, are often considered unattractive.

Regardless of the issue, there is probably a cosmetic dentistry procedure at Future of Dentistry that can improve it. Patients from throughout Greater Boston and Merrimack Valley have trusted us to improve their smiles. We also offer complete restorative dentistry services. Call for an appointment with us today!
