Beware Of An Acidic Diet

By Dental health, General dentistry

Boston tooth strengtheningThis message from Future of Dentistry is about tooth enamel.

Most people don’t think of a tooth as a body part that varies in strength. Our teeth seem to have a steady hardness and dependably grind food whenever we need them. However, teeth are dynamic organisms with continuous chemical processes.

The protective enamel that covers the softer interior is composed of minerals. Enamel demineralizes (loses some of its density) when it comes in contact with acids.

Saliva can dilute and neutralize acid so the tooth can remineralize This process isn’t instantaneous, however.

While the enamel is soft, the tooth is vulnerable to losing a microscopic outer layer of enamel. If the erosion continues, the much softer dentin is exposed. The dentin erodes more quickly. Eventually, the tooth may need to be extracted.

It is apparent that the typical diet is becoming more acidic. The list of acidic foods may surprise you. They include eggs, gravy, asparagus, chicken, cottage cheese, honey, fish, ham, butter, sour cream, aged cheese, and yogurt with active cultures. Generally, foods with a high sugar or artificial sweetener content are especially acidic. We don’t recommend eliminating the healthy foods on this list. However, we just want you to be aware of the issue.

Now let’s talk about drinks. You probably already know that soda pop and wine are not good for your teeth. Teens that sip soda all day can have acid erosion while their young teeth should be at their healthiest. In addition to soda, energy drinks are very popular and dentists are noticing the consequences.

At Future of Dentistry we are a full-service practice offering family and cosmetic dentistry, and much more. Patients from throughout Greater Boston and Merrimack Valley trust our care. Schedule a checkup with us today!

Children’s Cavities Are Not “Just A Part Of Growing Up”

By Dental health, Pediatric dentistry

Boston Cosmetic Dentistry

This post from Future of Dentistry focuses on dental sealants, a preventative treatment used to help prevent cavities in children.

Dental sealants are a thin coat of clear resin that is applied to the biting surfaces of teeth, usually the rear molars. The back teeth are more prone to cavities.

Once sealants have been applied they can prevent eighty percent of cavities for up to two years. After that, they can be re-applied.

Sealants are used mostly in children’s teeth, but adults can get them too.

Of course, dental sealants are not a substitute for daily oral care. They should be considered a supplement to brushing and flossing: an added layer of protection against cavities. Remember: cavities can be prevented. They should never be considered a part  of growing up.

At Future of Dentistry we specialize in family dentistry and preventative care. Patients come from throughout Greater Boston and Merrimack Valley. Call us to schedule your next checkup with us today!

By Dental health, General dentistry

cosmetic dental Boston

It’s easy to become a little complacent about your dental health. At Future of Dentistry, we know that all too well! Our goal in this blog post is for you to evaluate where you stand and consider how you can improve things.

Brushing

  • Good: Brush teeth once a day.
  • Better: Brush teeth right after each meal.
  • Best: Brush after each meal and floss correctly before bed.

Dental Checkups

  • Good: See us if you get a toothache.
  • Better: See us once a year even if you don’t notice any dental problems.
  • Best: Twice-yearly, have a thorough dental exam and professional dental cleaning at our office.

A White Smile

  • Good: Use a whitening toothpaste.
  • Better: Use a whitening product at home.
  • Best: Schedule an in-office whitening treatment.

Missing Tooth

  • Good enough for some people: Ignore it. (We don’t recommend this.)
  • Better: Get a quality dental bridge.
  • Best: Restore your smile with a durable and natural-functioning dental implant.

Smile-Friendly Nutrition

  • Good: Eat a healthy diet.
  • Better: Eat a healthy diet and limit sugary snacks and beverages.
  • Best: Eat a wholesome diet, limit between-meal snacking, eat lots of calcium-rich foods, minimize sugary foods, abstain from energy drinks and soda, and sip water throughout the day to keep acid at bay.

Treatment For Sensitive Teeth

By Dental health, General dentistry

North Andover cosmetic dental and tooth implants

There are lots of people out there who feel pain when they sip coffee or eat ice cream, or take a bite out of something hard. If sensitive teeth are a problem for you, talk to us about it at Future of Dentistry.

In many cases, sensitive teeth respond to something as simple as changing toothpaste. Most major toothpaste brands have a sensitive teeth version of their products. They can be very effective; many patients say they’ve helped within a week or so of use.

A possible cause of sensitivity is receding gums, which exposes microscopic holes in the teeth. When that happens, food and drinks that are hot or cold reach nerve cells that cause pain. We can evaluate the state of your gums, and whether something like the way you brush your teeth is a contributing factor.

There could also be a worn filling or new cavity. Treatment for that is as simple as replacing a worn one or filling the new cavity.

The important thing is to let us know what’s going on, at Future of Dentistry. People from throughout Greater Boston and Merrimack Valley call us for general and cosmetic dentistry services, and much more. Schedule your next checkup with us today!

To Chew Or Not To Chew

By Dental health, General dentistry

To Chew Or Not To Chew In Wakefield

Hello gum chewers! In this post from Future of Dentistry we’re going to talk about that sticky wad in your mouth. You know that it can freshen your breath, but can it really help guard your smile from tooth decay?

It really depends on the type of gum. Chewing regular sucrose-based gum can be helpful in removing bits of food from the surface of teeth, but that benefit is negated by the stream of sugar washing over your teeth as you chew.

However, gum with some alternative sweeteners has an added benefit for your pearly whites. Xylitol is a sweetener which not only has fewer calories than traditional sugars, but it also has antimicrobial properties that lessen plaque build-up. This means that xylitol inhibits the growth of bacteria that causes decay.

So if you’re headed out to a restaurant, bring a pack of sugar-free gum with you and pop it in your mouth when your meal is done. Of course, brushing and flossing are the ideal practices for your oral health, but when you can’t brush, select a sugarless gum with xylitol.

At Future of Dentistry we offer complete general and family dentistry. Patients from throughout Greater Boston and Merrimack Valley also come to our office for dental implants, and much more. Call to schedule your next checkup with us today!

Comprehensive Esthetic Dentistry At Future of Dentistry

Cosmetic dentistry is really coming into its own. At Future of Dentistry, cosmetic dentistry is about making positive changes to your teeth and smile, while at the same time maintaining your dental health.

Everyone, it seems, would like to improve the aesthetics of their smile. Who wouldn’t? When we combine several cosmetic dentistry techniques we call it a smile makeover. The available techniques include:

  • Teeth whitening. Professional teeth whitening is the most sure-fire way to transform your teeth from dull to dazzling. It surpasses any product you can buy at the store.
  • Porcelain veneers. Veneers cover any flaws in your smile: chips or cracks in teeth, gaps between teeth, and other imperfections.
  • Bonding. Bonding involves a  tooth-colored resin material to fix chips, cracks, and other issues. It can make teeth look longer, and is also an alternative to traditional fillings.

A beautiful smile is the sum of its parts. Any of the techniques listed above will improve your smile. Put them together and it becomes something special!

At Future of Dentistry we offer a full range of cosmetic dentistry procedures to improve your smile. Patients from throughout Greater Boston and Merrimack Valley also come to us for complete general and family dentistry. Call to schedule an appointment today!

How Your Lifestyle Affects Your Tooth Color

By Cosmetic dentistry, Teeth whitening

teeth whitening Wakefield

Most of us would like to have white teeth and a great smile. But discolored or just plain yellow teeth is common, especially in a world of tea and coffee drinkers. At Future of Dentistry we can fix that.

Tooth enamel is a little like skin. It has pores that can get clogged and discolored. The most common habits that work against you are:

  • Tobacco
  • Sodas and other dark colored drinks, i.e. coffee, red wines, and teas
  • Not practicing daily oral hygiene
  • Not having proper dental care

If you want to lighten your teeth, the above will consistently work against you.

We advise kicking these habits to the curb if you want the whitest teeth possible. (There are other good health reasons, too.)

If, in spite of your best efforts, your smile is still dull, professional teeth whitening from Future of Dentistry can revive it. Patients from throughout Greater Boston and Merrimack Valley trust us with their smiles! We also offer complete general and family dentistry. Call today to find out what we can do for your smile!

Did You Know That You Can Change the Shape of Your Gums?

By Cosmetic dentistry

gum contouring BillericaMost people know that cosmetic, restorative and orthodontic dentistry procedures improve the appearance of teeth. At Future of Dentistry there are treatments to reshape and straighten teeth, repair or whiten them, and even replace missing teeth with lifelike substitutes.

But what about your gums? Are you aware of how much your gums affect the look of your smile?

You Can Contour Your Gums

The shape and size of your gumline can make your teeth appear too large or too small or otherwise out of proportion. Gum contouring can fix gums that appear too low or too high in relation to the teeth and tailor them for the perfect smile.

People who are unhappy with their gums might want to examine gum contouring. Many dentists and periodontists offer gum contouring surgery.

Gingival Scultping

This procedure is also called gingival sculpting, gingival contouring or gum graft surgery, but don’t let the term surgery frighten you. Gingival sculpting is done with a laser. It is minimally invasive. The procedure usually involves little pain and requires no recovery time.

Gum Contouring Can Treat Gum Recession

Gum reshaping is not always done for purely cosmetic reasons, it is also used to treat gum recession, a common condition that can lead to tooth decay and tooth loss.

In gum graft surgery, soft tissue is commonly taken either from the roof of the mouth, the area surrounding the site of the grafting, or a tissue bank. Gum grafts applied to exposed tooth roots protect teeth from continuing gum recession and decay and reduce tooth sensitivity. Of course, gum grafts often increase the attractiveness of the smile in the process.

At Future of Dentistry cosmetic dentistry can improve any smile! Patients from throughout Greater Boston and Merrimack Valley also come to our practice for general and family dentistry. Schedule an appointment today!

What If My Dental Crown Cracks, Comes Loose, or Comes Off?

By General dentistry, Restorative dentistry

what to do if dental crown comes off Wakefield

Dental crowns are restorations that are cemented over a tooth that has been repaired, and we place a lot of them at Future of Dentistry.

While the cement is strong and reliable, crowns have been known to come off. It may have loosened or come off while brushing or flossing, or eating something sticky.  Here is what to do if your crown comes off.

There are three steps:

  1. First things first: find your crown if it has come off entirely. If you can’t find it, don’t worry. We can make a replacement.
  2. Next, give us a call. Even if we didn’t do the original we can reattach it.
  3. If your crown comes off after business hours, use denture adhesive to get it back in place temporarily. Do not use ordinary glue! You can find denture adhesive at a drugstore.

At Future of Dentistry we place a lot of dental crowns, and with great success. People from throughout Greater Boston and Merrimack Valley come to us for our complete general and family dentistry. Schedule an appointment today!

Raise Your Dental IQ

By Dental health, General dentistry

Raise Your Dental IQ

Little things you can do every day can raise your Dental IQ and benefit your smile. One simple lesson from Future of Dentistry involves bacteria, and everyone’s mouth has a lot of it.

But don’t worry, bacteria per se isn’t the problem. The critical thing is the balance of bacteria. This is where brushing and flossing come into play. Brush and floss properly each day and you will have a better chance of keeping the appropriate balance.

Other precautions you can take:

  • Wash your hands before you brush and floss. No exceptions!
  • Keep your toothbrush as far away from the toilet as possible. (Also, close the lid of the toilet before you flush!)
  • Replace that toothbrush. When it comes to your toothbrush, don’t get sentimental. Get a new one every three to four months.

If you can avoid the unhealthy balance of bacteria in your mouth, you can minimize the risk of gum disease and tooth decay.

At Future of Dentistry we want the best possible dental health for all our patients. We offer complete general and family  dentistry. Patients from throughout Greater Boston and Merrimack Valley also come to our office for cosmetic dentistry and much more. Schedule an appointment with us today!
