Dental sealants are a thin coat of clear resin that is applied to the biting surfaces of teeth, usually the rear molars. The back teeth are more prone to cavities.
Once sealants have been applied they can prevent eighty percent of cavities for up to two years. After that, they can be re-applied.
Sealants are used mostly in children’s teeth, but adults can get them too.
Of course, dental sealants are not a substitute for daily oral care. They should be considered a supplement to brushing and flossing: an added layer of protection against cavities. Remember: cavities can be prevented. They should never be considered a part of growing up.
