How Much Do You Know About Gum Disease?

By Dental health, General dentistry, Gum diseaseNo Comments

Gum disease is a leading cause of tooth loss in adult Americans, yet many people are surprisingly under-informed about it. In this blog post from Future of Dentistry, we share some basic facts about gum disease.

  • In its earliest and most treatable stage, gum disease is called gingivitis. The more advanced form is called periodontitis.
  • More than half of Americans who are thirty and older have periodontitis. That equals nearly sixty-five million people.
  • The best way to prevent gum disease is to brush and floss your teeth twice a day, and have a dental checkup twice a year.
  • Gum disease has few symptoms in its early stages. You could have it but be completely unaware.
  • Tiny amounts of blood in the sink when you brush is not normal. If you see a little blood when you brush and floss, make an appointment with us right away.
  • Improved brushing and flossing, along with using an antiseptic mouthwash, is often enough to successfully treat gingivitis.
  • Advanced gum disease affects bone and ligaments, in addition to the gums. It requires more aggressive treatment, such as deep cleaning, but it too can be reversed.
  • Gum disease has been linked to more serious health conditions, including heart attacks, stroke, and Alzheimer’s.

These are frightening facts. It reminds us of the old saying that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

To put it another way: guard your dental health with regular brushing and flossing, and regular checkups at Future of Dentistry. We treat gum disease. People from throughout Greater Boston and Merrimack Valley come to us for complete general and family dentistry. Call to schedule your next checkup today!

Keep Active Smiles Healthy

By Dental health, Pediatric dentistryNo Comments

Most kids enjoy playing sports, but in addition to playing fair and square, they must also play it safe. That’s why Future of Dentistry is taking time to remind parents what they can do to protect their active children’s smiles.

Whether they like soccer or baseball or riding a bike, the number one thing to do by far is to make sure they wear a mouthguard. When a tooth gets knocked out there can be long-term consequences, and a mouthguard goes a long way toward preventing that.

In addition to the trauma of a knocked-out tooth, there can be a big cost involved: a whole lot more than the cost of safety gear. Furthermore, when a baby tooth is knocked out it could cause the permanent teeth to come in cooked. In the short term, it makes it difficult to eat.

So along with all the appropriate gear – helmet, knee and elbow pads, and shin guards – be sure your youngster is wearing a mouthguard. At Future of Dentistry we offer complete pediatric dentistry. Patients from throughout Greater Boston and Merrimack Valley also come to us for general and family dentistry. Schedule an appointment today!

Use Five Fingers For Quick And Healthy Flossing

By Dental health, General dentistryNo Comments

This article is for kids who want to make flossing a habit. Here are 5 flossing steps made so easy you can tick them off one finger at a time, courtesty of Future of Dentistry.

Thumbkin: Thumb to Chest Reminder
Thumb to chest can remind me that this isn’t for my friends. Brushing the goobers off so I don’t gross them out. Rinsing with a fluoride rinse for fresh breath as I speak. That is for friends. Flossing is for me, myself and I. I want Healthy gums are as important as healthy teeth, therefore I floss.

Pointer: Pointer Fingers Measure
How much floss will I need to floss my 32 teeth? The American Dental Association advises that you start with about 18 inches. Roughly 6 lengths of your pointer finger should be adequate.

Tall Man: Wrap the Middle Fingers
This is a team endeavor. With the middle fingers wound up in the floss, the thumb and forefinger can grip and guide the floss into place. After curving the floss around the tooth into a “C” shape, and the up and down motions have wiped away plaque, then “unspool” for a new section for the next tooth in line.

Ring Man: The Smell Test
Many a long term relationship has been cut short due to not-so-fresh breath. Smell floss before going between teeth. Smell it after. Bad smell? Brushing is not cleaning away that bacteria sufficiently. Hurray for floss! This smell test says the brushing needs to be adjusted. Be gentle with your gums. Keep those areas at the base of your teeth bacteria free.

Pinky: Time to Promise
Make the commitment now. Every time you look at your pinky, remember that you pinky promised to keep those gums free from disease. Flossing isn’t so much about removing food as it is about removing dental plaque. Plaque results in decay and inflamed gums. Periodontal disease can eventually bring about tooth loss. Tooth neglect is a slippery slope.

At Future of Dentistry your dental health is always our top priority! Services include general and family dentistry. Patients from throughout Greater Boston and Merrimack Valley also come to us for cosmetic dentistry, and all their dental care needs. Schedule an appointment today!

Find A Few Minutes To Floss

By Dental health, General dentistryNo Comments

One of the reasons some people don’t floss their teeth every day is that it’s hard for them to find the time. If you’ve found this to be true, the team at Future of Dentistry reminds you how important flossing is to your dental health.

Right before bedtime is the most common time people floss. It’s the best time, too, because it’s a good idea to sleep with a clean mouth.

Should you floss before you brush your teeth, or afterward? This may be a case of six of one, half a dozen of the other. The important thing is that you floss every day, and that you do a good job of it.

There are lots of different kinds of floss to choose from. We think it’s a good idea to shop around, and find the kind of floss you like best. Then make sure to use it!

At Future of Dentistry we want the best possible dental health for all our patients, who come from throughout Greater Boston and Merrimack Valley for complete general and family dentistry. We also improve smiles with cosmetic dentistry. Schedule your next checkup with us today!

By Cosmetic dentistryNo Comments

dental payment plans Dracut

Who would say no to a more attractive smile? Probably no one, and with cosmetic dentistry procedures from Future of Dentistry, anyone can get the smile they want.

Here is a quick look at some of our most popular treatments.

  • Teeth whitening is a very common procedure used to lighten stained teeth. This quick and easy treatment is usually done in the dentist office, and the results can be extremely dramatic.
  • Bonding is a popular treatment that uses a dental composite that resembles enamel. This material is applied to the surface of the teeth, sculpted into the desired shape, and then hardened and polished.
  • Tooth reshaping is a simple way to improve the appearance of your smile. It involves removing part of the enamel and can be used to fix small chips or to change the length or position of teeth.
  • Veneers are custom-made porcelain coverings that are very thin. They are bonded to the teeth and can be used to close gaps or cover discolored teeth.
  • Dental implants are the best way to replace a missing tooth.
  • Smile makeovers use a combination of services to get dental patients the smiles they want.

If you’d like to upgrade your smile, consider cosmetic dentistry from Future of Dentistry. We’ve improved the smiles of patients throughout Greater Boston and Merrimack Valley, who also come to us for general and family dentistry, and much more. Call our office to schedule an appointment today!

Debunking Dental Myths

By Dental health, General dentistryNo Comments

North Andover cosmetic dental and tooth implants

In this post from Future of Dentistry we focus on three common myths about dental health.

  • All Sugar Is Equally Bad For Teeth. We all know that sugar increases our risk of tooth decay, but some types are worse than others. Sugar-based foods that sit on the teeth are more dangerous than those that are swallowed immediately. For example, sipping a soda or sucking on a mint can be worse than eating a candy bar all at once.
  • You Don’t Need To Worry About Baby Teeth Because They Will Fall Out Anyway. Healthy primary teeth serve several important purposes. They allow the child to eat and speak properly. They retain proper spacing of teeth. A healthy smile instills confidence and self-esteem. Healthy baby teeth eliminate the pain of decay which disrupts normal daily activity.
  • Pulling A Tooth Is A Good Alternative To A Root Canal. We will let the American Associate of Endodontists explain this one: “Saving your natural teeth, if possible, is the very best option … [root canals], along with appropriate restoration, is a cost-effective way to treat teeth with damaged pulp and is usually less expensive than extraction and placement of a bridge or an implant. [It] also has a very high success rate.”

At Future of Dentistry we offer complete general and family dentistry. Patients from throughout Greater Boston and Merrimack Valley also come to our practice for dental implants, and much more. Call to schedule an appointment with us today!

Beware Of Hidden Sugar

By Dental health, General dentistryNo Comments

preventative dentistry in Billerica

Most of us consume far too much sugar. That isn’t exactly a news flash, but at Future of Dentistry we want to remind you what sugar does to teeth, and what you can do about it.

We get cavities when acids in the mouth attack the enamel and dentin of the teeth. The acid is produced by bacteria in plaque, that sticky film that forms on the surfaces of teeth. When sugar is introduced it interacts with the bacteria in the plaque, and makes the acids, which attack the teeth and cause cavities.

That’s why it is so important to choose food and drink wisely. But it isn’t easy, is it? Sugar seems to be in just about everything. Health experts say the average person in the United States consumes about 19.5 teaspoons of sugar every single day. That is twice as much as is recommended by the American Heart Association!

Knowing how much sugar is in the food that you buy is vital: not just to your teeth, but to your overall health. Reading ingredient labels on processed foods is essential.

Of course, some things are obvious. Eliminate or minimize the sweet stuff, like soda, candy, cookies, cakes, and donuts. Sweet things may seem to make life worthwhile, but there is a high cost.

If you have an incurable sweet tooth, you might try softening the blow by eating more fruit. You’ll still need to brush, of course, but the natural sugars in fruit aren’t as harmful as those in processed foods. If making that change sounds difficult, remember what a wise person once said: we like what we learn to like.

At Fuure of Dentistry we care about the dental health of each of our patients. So please cut back on sugar, brush your teeth at least twice a day, don’t forget to floss, and see us for a cleaning and checkup every six months. Patients from throughout Greater Boston and Merrimack Valley come to us for general and family dentistry, cosmetic dentistry, and much more. Schedule your next appointment with us today!
