Here are some common dental emergencies and how to handle them. These recommendations can help alleviate pain and damage, ensuring your treatment goes as smoothly as possible:

  • Intense Tooth Pain or Toothache: This could indicate an infection. Apply a hot compress for relief and visit our office immediately.
  • Broken, Cracked, or Chipped Tooth: Collect any broken pieces for possible reattachment. If there’s bleeding, rinse your mouth and apply gauze to stop it.
  • Object Stuck Between Teeth: Avoid using sharp objects to remove it. If the object won’t come out easily, stop trying and call us.
  • Knocked-Out Tooth: Place the tooth in a bag of milk and bring it with you to our office. We might be able to reattach it. For bleeding, rinse and apply gauze.
  • Intense Jaw Pain: This might signal an infection. Visit us as soon as possible.
  • Severe Tooth Pain: Persistent tooth pain indicates a possible infection. Call us immediately for an appointment.
  • Tooth Infection: Infections from decay, injury, or old dental work need urgent care. Treat this as a dental emergency.
  • Bleeding in the Mouth: Rinse with warm water and apply gauze or a clean towel to stop the bleeding.
  • Intense Swelling: Use a cold compress for painful swelling in your mouth, around your teeth, or jaw.

The most crucial action during a dental emergency is to visit our office promptly. Quick intervention can save your tooth and protect your oral health.

Don’t wait! Call our North Andover Office at (978) 685-8313 immediately to be seen by our dentists, if you or a loved one are experiencing a dental emergency.

How To Handle Dental Emergencies

By now, you know the best thing to do in an emergency is to give us a call. However, if you’re looking for some ways to manage the pain and keep the damage to a minimum on your way to your appointment, these suggestions will help:

  • You’ve chipped a tooth: Is a chipped tooth really a big deal? Even a small chip can leave a tooth vulnerable to further damage. That’s why you’ll need a dentist to evaluate the damage. If possible, save the piece of the tooth that was chipped off and bring it to your appointment.
  • You’re experiencing severe tooth pain: Pain can be a sign of infection and should be assessed by an emergency dentist. To help with pain or discomfort before your appointment, try applying a hot compress to your face in the area of concern.
  • You’ve knocked out or lost a tooth: If you’ve lost a tooth, try to find it and put it in milk right away. This will help preserve the tooth on the way to your appointment. (This is why we suggest keeping a liquid-tight container in your first aid kit.) As with broken teeth, if bleeding occurs, rinse out your mouth and apply sterile gauze to help stop the bleeding.
  • You’ve broken a tooth: If at all possible, collect the pieces of your broken tooth and bring them to your appointment. (This is one of the reasons for keeping baggies in your first aid kit.) If you’re experiencing any bleeding, rinse your mouth clear of blood with a warm water and salt rinse and then apply sterile gauze to help stop the bleeding.

If you think you may be experiencing a dental emergency, contact our North Andover practice at (978) 685-8313 as soon as possible.

The Entire Staff Of Dentists, Hygienists, And Administrative Professionals Are Wonderful.
All Are Thorough, Caring, And Helpful.
5 stars does not give this place enough credit. I broke my tooth a few nights before my appointment and they took me right in the next day that I was available to get down there. It was 5:30 on a Thursday and I was greeted like I was there first patient of the day by Erin. I have a fear of the dentist but the staff and Dr.Denis got me through it and zero pain during the process. I can't thank you all enough. I will be going here for all dental work. Thanks for adding me to the family!
