Surgical Dentistry in Chelmsford

Most people require dental surgery at some point in their lives. While many people have reasonable anxiety about the prospect of oral surgery, we want all our patients to know and feel that they are in good hands when they come into our office.

Types Of Dental Surgery Procedures

There are many different surgical procedures performed in the dental industry. Some of the dental surgery procedures we offer at our practice include:

  • Laser gum surgery.
  • Gingival plastic surgery, also known as a gum graft.
  • Bone augmentation, also known as a bone graft.
  • Extractions (including impacted wisdom teeth).
  • Dental implants.

When you schedule a surgery consultation with Future of Dentistry, we’ll take you through all your options and determine which procedure is the best course after considering your needs and medical history.

Bone Graft

Sometimes, your dentist might recommend a bone graft before you can be eligible for a different dental surgery. This can happen when patients come in for a dental implant and we find there is insufficient bone mass in the jaw to accommodate one.

This is usually the result of infection or trauma that has caused the bone to resorb or recede. In this case, a bone graft dental surgery is recommended to help restore bone density in a given area.

This procedure takes bone tissue from a different area of the jaw and applies it to the weakened area, creating a stable and strong environment for a dental implant. Bone graft surgeries are always performed with the mouth’s total health in mind, so every contingent part will be able to function optimally.

The Gum Graft

At Future of Dentistry, we perform gum grafts using state-of-the-art laser technology, in order to ensure minimal pain, faster healing times, and greater surgical accuracy.

The gum graft, also known as a periodontal graft, is a solution to gum recession, which can occur because of aggressive brushing, teeth grinding, periodontal disease, or just the natural positioning of the teeth.

Gum recession exposes sensitive nerve tissues beneath the teeth that can cause intense pain when stimulated by extreme temperatures. Gum graft surgery restores your gum line to its proper height, covering the nerves and protecting your teeth from decay while minimizing and even eliminating heightened sensitivities.

Impacted Wisdom Teeth

One of the most common reasons you might need a dental surgery is for wisdom teeth removal. Your wisdom teeth are the last molars to form in your mouth, usually during your teen years when you already have a full set of teeth.

Wisdom teeth often become impacted—pushed up against the roots of the exposed teeth or trapped underneath the gum line. Impacted wisdom teeth can also grow in awkwardly due to an inability to break through the gums and create space for themselves.

This overcrowding from impacted wisdom teeth can lead to other oral problems, such as cysts, infections, cavities, or general tooth pain. To prevent this, we regularly perform wisdom teeth removal surgery years before the teeth have a chance to become impacted. The sooner we are able to remove the wisdom teeth, the more likely it is that you can have a speedy recovery.

Wisdom tooth removal surgery usually takes an hour and is performed in-office by our very own Dr. Casazza.
